an Expanded Middle Age of Life
“I began to have an idea of my life, not as the slow shaping of achievement to fit my preconceived purposes, but as the gradual discovery and growth of a purpose which I did not know.”
~Joanna Field, English Psychologist, b. 1900
If you are entering what is being called the expanded middle age of life, welcome to the journey. As people live longer, work longer and must respond to the ever changing fabric of our lives, culture and societal norms, the old model of aging and retirement no longer serves the purpose it once did.
So, how do you prepare for this next stage? You will be faced with new choices and challenges; some under your control and many that are thrust upon you without warning or preparation.
There are always choices even if, at moments, you cannot see them. You can decide to either embrace these transitions with curiosity, courage and commitment or allow your fears and doubts to take over and direct your path. The choice will be one that each individual must make and, as the upcoming new midlife generation, we can decide to work together to build communities and resources that are needed to forge ahead with passion, purpose and perspective.
